Artistic value
Around the face of a woman wearing a red headscarf, raised rosettes of calligraphy open like so many eyes watching the viewer. The thickly worked surface gives the letter an almost sculptural presence. The painting questions how identity is looked at: the gaze we cast on others, and the one we receive.
